There was a full house
Saturday night June 18, 2005 at White Rock Boxing Gym for the
Summer Explosion professional boxing event. Before the bouts
began local vocalist Henry Flowers brought the house down with
an acapello version of the National Anthem. We were excited and
proud to have two special guests of such caliber come hang out
with us at the Summer Explosion. Senator Jake Knotts and Lt.
Governor Andrč Bauer were introduced in the ring, and of course
there were no blows thrown; only friendly hello’s and waves.
However, when the bouts started the fans were on their feet
cheering. The 1st half of the fight card was nothing
more than short and sweet.
The first bout
of the night lightweights Corey Goodwin of SC and TN’s Chris
Burford entered in the ring for a 4 round fight. But, 2 minutes
and 30 seconds into the 2nd round, Goodwin landed a
right to the body and took this win by KO.
In the 2nd
bout Cruiserweight Lafarrell Bunting of TN quickly sent Rowdy
Rookerd back to MS with a TKO at 1 minute and 45 seconds into
the 1st round in a scheduled 4 round bout.
Super
Middleweights Micky Stackhouse of SC and Nelson Browning of MS
were scheduled for a 4 round bout, however Stackhouse stopped
Browning with a TKO 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the 2nd
round.
Fighting for
the vacant WBE Intercontinental Featherweight title, LaShaun
“Lil’ Bossman” Blair out of TN came out hard against Charles
Jones of SC when the round 1 bell rang. Jones towering over
Blair by more than a foot found it hard to land any blows other
than to the body. Lil’ Bossman on the other hand was landing a
good many of his punches and with the majority of the crowd
cheering him on he kept punching. Despite a bloody nose this 6
round bout went the distance and winning by split decision Jones
took home the WBE Intercontinental Featherweight belt.
After a brief
intermission, the heavyweights brought it to the ring for 4
rounds. White Rock’s own Moultrie “Mooch” Witherspoon stayed
focus and controlled each round against one of Georgia’s big
boys, Lincoln Luke. Luke took the punches Witherspoon threw and
returned some of his own. The judges made a unanimous decision
and awarded the undefeated heavyweight sensation Moultrie
“Mooch” Witherspoon the win in this exciting bout.
Boxing is for
girls too!
Scheduled for
10 rounds the main event was a title fight for the vacant WIBC
(Women’s International Boxing Committee) Featherweight title.
Samantha Browning, who defeated Tonya Harding in both of there
pro debuts and with a 3-0-0 record, entered the ring first with
a face of determination and ready to brawl. WBE Featherweight
Champion Donna “Nature Girl” Biggers, a home town favorite, also
entered the ring ready to fight. Biggers threw a jab and
followed up with combinations to the head. Browning turned away
several times from the punches that the Nature Girl was
throwing. Biggers kept coming and landed body punches that
Mississippi’s Browning could not handle. The Nature Girl takes
the WIBC Featherweight title with no problems with a TKO 1
minute 35 seconds into the 1st round. With two title
belts Biggers record now stands at 13-1-1 and says “I’m ready
for an opponent that will go the distance and give me a real
fight. I’m ready to fight.”
All in all the
fans and sponsors had an EXPLOSIVE SUMMER night. We look forward
to everyone coming to the next professional boxing event
promoted by Head Hunter Boxing Promotions on August 13, 2005 so
mark those calendars and join us for a night to remember.
